The History of the Aran Jumper

The History of the Aran Jumper on Katie Crafts; https://www.katiecrafts.com

Happy Friday, friends! I bumped my scheduled post for today (those long awaited Longwood Gardens photos- they will be Monday’s post now, I promise!) in favor of this really cool one! It’s an interactive timeline depicting the history of the Aran Jumper- so it’s a fashion AND knitting post all in one. How perfect, right!?

Did you know…

  • The first Aran hand-knit items went on sale in 1935, despite having been around for decades. They were sold in a Dublin store called “The Country Shop,” which was run by a lover of Irish crafts, Dr. Muriel Gahan.

You can learn more about Aran sweaters on the interactive timeline below! The timeline comes from Murphy of Ireland, which is an Irish heritage clothing retailer. The company is based in Co. Donegal in Ireland and has been in business for over 75 years! Make sure you check out their website after you’ve had a go at their timeline!

Special thanks to Murphy of Ireland for creating and sharing such an interesting timeline, and for the perfect featured photo for this post!

One of my favorite things to wear in the chilly weather is a cozy chunky cable knit sweater! Now I’ll think of the history of my sweaters whenever I wear them. 🙂

Which fact about Aran jumpers did you find the most interesting? What is your favorite thing to wear in the cooler Fall months?

  1. Cool! I knew they came from Ireland where each family had their own pattern, but I did not know why!

  2. Wow, very cool Katie! I didn’t know the history at all, so this was very exciting for me to learn! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  3. This is super cool! I always find it interesting to know the stories of items like this. Really neat, so thanks for sharing. =0)
